As part of the ongoing refurbishment of The Maid of the Loch, Kelsen was appointed to carry out Phase 1 of the pier side refurbishments work. The works required the survey and recording of historic greenheart fenders and associated metalwork prior to their removal.

Removal of the existing timberwork allowed access to the sandstone pier knuckle which required complete re-pointing. Historic Environment Scotland provided a technical brief for three different trial mixes of lime mortars and paid regular visits to site to inspect the works. Meticulous site record keeping was required to note temperature/weather conditions/loch condition to provide background information for the post-application analysis of the performance of the differing mortars. Precise gauging of the mortar was also a defining requirement. A study paper is due to be published by HES to record the project and findings.

Due to the location of the works, effectively on/within Loch Lomond a special duty of care was required to ensure the works caused no environmental impact on the loch.
